In 1920, the wives of Rotarians in Great Britain and Ireland joined hands to help their husbands with social work undertaken by Rotary.
On 10th January 1924 “Inner Wheel Club of Manchaster” was formed and Mrs. Margarette Oliver Golding was elected as the ï¬rstAssociation President and Mrs. Nixon as first Association Secretary. This day is celebrated as Inner Wheel Day. Since then the movement grow rapidly and spread all over the globe.
The District Inner Wheel District was formed on 10th January 1928 All women’s clubs existing alongside Rotary in Machester and Liverpool united to form the District Inner Wheel District Committee, District No.5 By 1934 there were 79 clubs in 8 District which appropriately came together to form an Association of Inner Wheel Clubs of Great Britain and Ireland.
- 1931 – The first overseas Club was formed in Ballarat, Australia.
- On 6th may, 1934, the Association of Inner Wheel Clubs in Great Britain and Ireland came into being.
- Since 1936 – Newly formed Inner Wheel Clubs were given a Certificate of Membership or “THE CHARTER”.
- In 1955 – Inner Wheel came to India with formation of I.W.Club of Ahmedabad as District 75 now District 305. (The First District in India)
- 1968 – Ms. Malti Rana was appointed the First I.I.W.Representative.
- 1st July 1967 – International Inner Wheel came into being. The first board meeting was held in Copenhagen.
- Five board members were present from Denmark, Great Britain, Ireland, Neterlands, Norway ans Sweden.
- Ms. Lavender Weigtman became the first I.I.W. President and came to india in 1968. Combined three districts of Gujrat, Saurashtra and Bombay and named as National Council of
India.
- 1976 – The Association of I.W. Clubs in india, Sri Lanka and
Bangladesh was formed, Ms. Raksha Mehta (District 314) was
the first President.
- 1977 – The first conference of the Association was held in
Bombay. Sri Lanka and Bangladesh are no longer in
Association of I.W. Clubs in india, India is now the second
largestAssociation after Great Britain & Ireland
- 1986-87 – Mrs. Minna Kapur was the first Indian lady to get the
highest honourthe highest office of I.I.W. President.
- 1993-94 – Mrs. Anita Agarwal became the second Indian lady
to get the highest honourthe highest office of I.I.W. President.
- 2007-08 – Mrs. Kamala Ramakrishnan became the third Indian
lady to get the highest honourto become the I.I.W President.
- 2010-2011 – Dr. Mrs. Pallavi Shah is the fourth Indian lady to
become the I.I.W President.
- 2014-15 – Mrs.Abha Gupta was I.I.W President.
- 2017-18 – Dr. Kapila Gupta was I.I.W President and Mrs.
AzaghuAnnamaIai as I.I.W. Treasurer.
- 2019-20 – PAP Veena Vyas Elected as IIW Vice President and
PAP Patricia Hilton IIW Board Director.
Distrcit 313 History
- The year 1984 saw another shake up in tune with Rotary Districts. Districts 314 and 317 were bifurcated with 7 clubs of Dist. 314 and 2 clubs of Dist. 317 forming the new District 313. Mrs. Charu Chinchankar was the new Founder Chairman of District 313. Mrs. Surabhi Nag, PDC of Dist. 314 and a member of Inner Wheel Club of Poona was the first Association Council member.
- Dr. Taramati Jaju of Satara Club of erstwhile Dist. 31 7, was the first Vice Chairman. Prema Rathi was the first District Secretary and Deepa Mukherjee the Treasurer – both from Inner Wheel Club of Poona.
- The new Dist. 313 began with just nine clubs – seven from Dist. 314 and two – Satara & Satara Camp from Dist. 317. the funds and trophis of Dist. 314 were divided and we got funds and 3 trophies as our share to start the District. Some funds were also contributed from Dist. 317.
- District 313, which started on such a strong footing has since climbed the pinnacle of success with two Past Association Presidents – Charu Chichankar and Past Association Treasurer, Meena Mahbubani, Past International Inner Wheel Board Director, Roshan, IPAP Immediate Past Association President Smita Pingale and very many PDCs who have contributed substantially to make our Dist 313 one of the best Districts in the Association.
- This in brief then, is the history of the wonderful women of our District, who may or may not be public ï¬gures in society, but who are women who made friendship and social service their objectives ; who had the vision in the past to see a better tomorrow and who will take the present and future members and leaders on the path of progress in International friendship and understanding.
